Microdermabrasion facials is generally safe for most skin types but is not recommended for clients with a history of keloid scarring, sensitive skin, rosacea or broken blood vessels on the skin’s surface. A complimentary product consultation is included for your favorite dermatology grade facial products including Image and Factor 5.

Microdermabrasion is a non-surgical and minimally invasive procedure that helps renew overall skin tone and texture. Our licensed estheticians take exceptional pride in carefully examining your skin to recommend the best treatment for your individual needs.

What Does Microdermabrasion Do?

Because microdermabrasion works by effectively removing the top layer of skin, where many skin issues are evidenced, it is mostly used for those who want a treatment for:

  • Reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles

  • Reducing the appearance of age spots and hyperpigmentation

  • Removing blackheads and swollen pores

  • Tackling acne and any associated scarring

  • Reducing the appearance of stretch marks

  • Getting rid of uneven skin texture and tone

  • Melasma (patches of discolouration)

  • Dealing with sun damage

What is Microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion is a specialist skin treatment. A specialised applicator is used to gently scrape away the very top layer of skin. Another microdermabrasion technique uses a spray containing either aluminium oxide or sodium bicarbonate to do the same thing. It’s widely considered to be safe and suitable for most skin types and skin colours.

Microdermabrasion isn’t invasive, but it does use specialist skills and tools. As such, you want to have it completed by a qualified professional. You are usually seated in a reclined position, or lying down, and the technician will work using the chosen tools on the targeted area. Usually, the treatment finishes with the application of a soothing moisturizer and sunscreen.

3 Main Kinds of Dermabrasion:

  • Diamond-tip hand piece: This is a specially designed tool that simultaneously sloughs off dead cells whilst suctioning them away from the skin. The depth of the microdermabrasion is determined by the technician’s applied pressure and the length of time on an area of skin. It’s typically used on the face, particularly close to the eyes due to its precision.

  • Crystal: Crystal microdermabrasion sprays fine crystals onto the skin which rub off the dead skin cells and the outer layer. Again, there is an in-built suction to remove the skin and used crystals immediately.

  • Hydra dermabrasion: This is a newer microdermabrasion method and uses water and oxygen to exfoliate the skin, instead of the crystals described above.

The Microdermabrasion Process

  • A microdermabrasion appointment lasts about an hour and is administered by one of our licensed estheticians. To prepare for your microdermabrasion appointment, we recommend avoiding any tanning creams, waxing, and sun exposure for a week before treatment.

  • During the appointment, your provider will use a hand-held device to gently spray on particles or sand away the dull outermost layer of the skin, revealing the fresh and younger-looking skin underneath. Microdermabrasion allows the underlying layer of new skin to grow, promotes collagen production, and smoothes and firms your skin.

  • There is minimal to no recovery time after the procedure, and you can enjoy your newly rejuvenated appearance when you walk out of your appointment. However, we advise you to take extreme care in protecting your newly resurfaced skin by wearing a strong SPF sunscreen.

Microdermabrasion: It’s Not Dermaplaning!

Microdermabrasion can sometimes be confused with dermaplaning. Dermaplaning uses a scalpel to scrape the top level of the skin. Many dermaplaning vs microdermabrasion debates exist, but both bring worthwhile benefits. Particularly for improving texture, without removing too much of your skin’s natural oils, microdermabrasion is usually preferred.

Benefits of Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion (3).png

Microdermabrasion is a safe procedure suitable for all skin types. People may choose to get microdermabrasion treatment if they are looking to improve the appearance of sun damage, fine lines and wrinkles, age spots, acne, and melasma. Additional benefits of microdermabrasion include:

  • Fresher looking skin

  • Diminished wrinkles

  • Minimized fine lines

  • Brighter skin tone

  • Reduced age spots

  • Smaller pores

  • Brighter skin tone

  • Faded scars

  • Rejuvenated appearance

Understanding the benefits of microdermabrasion highlights its value beyond the basics. After treatment, your skin will feel exceptionally smooth and even in pigmentation. The procedure boosts collagen production, enhancing elasticity and reducing wrinkles. It also makes mild scarring, such as from acne or stretch marks, less noticeable, and improves overall skin cleanliness and circulation. This helps your skin better absorb skincare products, which is beneficial for treating conditions like acne. Microdermabrasion is a safe, minimally invasive option with a short recovery time compared to harsher treatments. While it can improve shallow acne scars, deeper scars might see less benefit.

Does Microdermabrasion Hurt?

  • The term ‘abrasion’ can put you off, thinking that microdermabrasion will be a painful experience. However, microdermabrasion really shouldn’t hurt. The first time you have it done, it may feel a little uncomfortable and your skin may feel quite tight afterwards. You may also feel the treated area of skin is quite warm later on.

  • You should be honest with your technician about your comfort levels. They can always adjust the suction level to make it more comfortable. If you have sensitive skin, do let the technician know in advance.

Microdermabrasion side effects

Microdermabrasion is safe and most of the microdermabrasion side effects are either very short lived, or aren’t experienced when microdermabrasion is completed by a skilled technician who has assessed your skin type carefully.

The most common side effects are simply a little redness and tenderness immediately after the treatment. The vast majority of people find that this goes down within an hour to two. Occasionally there may be some bruising from the suction process, but the technician should take care to avoid this.

Those with particularly sensitive skin, or very severe acne, may need to take particular care to avoid irritation. Microdermabrasion isn’t recommended if you have a skin condition such as eczema, rosacea, psoriasis or herpes. You shouldn’t have microdermabrasion done if you’ve currently got sunburn or any open sores.

Microdermabrasion Aftercare

  • The easiest way to avoid or minimise side effects is to keep your skin hydrated with gentle moisturisers and use a sunscreen for the first few weeks after treatment. Try not to use topical acne creams for at least 24 hours after microdermabrasion.

  • How often should you get microdermabrasion?
How often you have microdermabrasion done is usually determined by your personal skin concerns. Typically, technicians will plan a number of initial sessions followed by wider spaced maintenance. This could vary from a weekly to a monthly basis.

  • Microdermabrasion is a popular treatment but it does typically need to be completed within a beauty salon, due to the equipment used. Home microdermabrasion kits are not as effective. For an accessible alternative, we have plenty of facial treatments to choose from which can be done at home.

A consultation at Mathis Salon & Spa is more than just a conversation. Our injectors take the time to get to know you and analyze key factors, like lifestyle, desired outcome, and  face shape to help determine the right approach for your customized service.

At Mathis Salon & Spa, we understand that service pricing can often be confusing and hard to plan for. Our goal is to simplify this process, making it easier for you to budget and enjoy your experience without any surprises.

  • What does Botox treatment involve?
Botox treatment can take as little as 10 minutes, depending on the extent of your session. When you arrive for your treatment, your nurse may numb your skin to reduce discomfort during the treatment. You may receive a numbing injection, a numbing cream or a cold spray on your skin. Next, a nurse will use a tiny needle to inject the Botox cosmetic into your skin or muscles. For crow’s feet, you will receive up to 3 injections in the orbicularis oculi (the muscle on the side of the eye area) on each side of your face, and for frown lines, you will receive 5 injections total in the muscles in your forehead.
  • How much does Botox cost?
The cost of Botox injections depends on the size of your facial muscles, the skill and experience of the injector, the number of treatment areas, the number of product units, where you live, and your desired outcome. Typically, men require more units than women because they have larger facial muscles. Here at Mathis Aesthetics. Botox costs $14 per unit. The price of a Botox treatment typically ranges between $350-$650 at our MedSpa, depending on the number of units required. NEW BOTOX® Tiered pricing: Below 40 units= $14 per unit Below 60 units= $12 per unit 60 units+= $11 per unit 65+ = $10/unit
  • When will I see results?
Botox injections do not work instantly. When Botox is injected, it takes from seven to fourteen (7-14) days to fully block the nerves that make the muscles contract, causing them to relax. In most cases, patients should be able to see a slightly noticeable difference in the appearance of the treated area within the first week. If this is your first Botox treatment, you may experience a “heavy” sensation or feelings of tightness in the treatment area. Because your muscles have been temporarily paralyzed, you likely also notice a difference in your range of expressions.
  • How should I prepare for my Botox treatment?
Before your Botox treatment, let your nurse know if you have had any other type of botulinum toxin injections in the last four months or if you have taken any muscle relaxants, sleeping medication or allergy medications. Your nurse may also ask you to refrain from taking blood thinners before your treatment. You may wear your normal clothing to your treatment.
  • Is there downtime after a Botox treatment?
Sometimes called a lunchtime procedure, you can expect little to no recovery time after your treatment. You can return to your normal activities immediately. We do recommend that you stay upright and refrain from massaging the injection area for 4 hours after the procedure, to prevent the cosmetic from moving beyond the treated area.
  • What does a Botox injection feel like?
Quick and minimally invasive, your mid-level medical injector (nurse practitioner or physician assistant) will inject Botox with a very small needle directly into the muscles that need to be relaxed. Any discomfort at the injection site should be very minimal. You might feel a slight residual stinging immediately after your Botox injections. A small bump may also appear where the injection occurs, but that will quickly fade. After five minutes, your face will look nearly identical to how it looked when you walked into Mathis Aesthetics, with the exception of some redness if you have sensitive skin. Typically, you can return back to work or normal activity immediately post-treatment. On a scale from 1-10, most guests rate it a 1-2.
  • What is Masseter Botox?
Masseter Botox is the name for the medical treatment where Botox is injected into the masseter muscle. This treatment is also referred to as “teeth-grinding injections” or “jaw Botox.” The masseter muscle is a large, rectangular facial muscle that connects your lower jaw to your cheek bone and is the main muscle for chewing. Injecting botulinum toxin type A into the masseter blocks nerve cells to help relax the muscle. It is a highly effective treatment for patients who clench or grind their teeth or have been diagnosed with TMJ. Masseter Muscle Botox is also popular non-surgical treatment to help reduce the width and shape of a square jawline — known as jawline slimming or facial slimming.
  • How long does Masseter Botox last?
Botox results typically last 3-4 months. How often you need Botox treatments is slightly different for every individual. Our bodies metabolize the botulism toxin injections at different rates. Muscle mass, age and your desired outcome also help determine the ideal treatment protocol.
  • How often will I need Botox injections?
For optimal results, you will need Botox injections at regular intervals every 3-4 months.
  • How will I feel after my Botox treatment?
It is very common to feel slight heaviness or pressure in the treated area after Botox injections. Some people experience temporary side effects like a mild headache on the treatment day and the day after.
